What is Disaster Mitigation?
Sendai Framework For Risk Reduction
We cannot stop natural disasters, but WE CAN arm ourselves with knowledge @rockagainstpovertyofficial
Rock Against Poverty is a charity initiative leveraging emerging technology such as Virtual Reality Simulation, Artificial Intelligence, and Blockchain to solve major problems in planning and funding humanitarian projects. Empowered by technology, we aim to raise $1 billion dollars annually for disaster mitigation, and poverty alleviation globally. This blog article looks at the basics of how we define disaster and what actually is disaster mitigation.
How do we define disaster?
Disaster has many different definitions and explanations, however for the purpose of this informative blog, disaster is defined as a sudden, calamitous event bringing great damage, loss and destruction and devastation to life and property. Furthermore, mitigation is the effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. In order for mitigation to be effective, we need to take action NOW, before the next disaster as this will help reduce human and financial consequences later.
What is Disaster Mitigation?
Disaster mitigation measures are those that eliminate or reduce the impacts and risks of hazards through proactive measures taken before an emergency or disaster occurs. “The theory of disaster mitigation is, by making an investment of time, money and planning prior to the occurrence of natural disasters, there can be tremendous savings that result from reducing the impact of natural disasters when they inevitably occur” (Brenner, 1997).
Principal objectives of mitigation:
Save lives
Reduce economic disruption
Decrease vulnerability/increase capacity
Decrease chance/level of conflict
